Professional Distinctions

Course Director, Continuing Legal Education Seminars

Course directors lead the effort to plan and officiate continuing legal education seminars. They select colleagues to serve on the course’s planning committee and then lead the committee in planning the course’s program. Course directors then oversee the program as it is presented. The lawyers selected for this honor must first prove themselves over time to be capable and accurate writers, and entertaining presenters. Course directors are selected with significant input from practicing lawyers, so being selected is a clear indication that the lawyer is well respected by his peers.

Very few attorneys earn the distinction of serving as Course Director or Program Chair of major CLE seminars. I have served as Course Director or Program Chair of the following major seminars:

Course Director, Advanced Real Estate Drafting Course (TexasBarCLE, 19th Annual, 2008)

Course Director, Advanced Real Estate Law Course (TexasBarCLE, 33rd Annual, 2011)

Program Chair, Comparing Water Supply Challenges of the Major Us Shale Plays Posed by Hydraulic Fracturing (ALI-ABA, 2011)

Recipient of the 2011 Weatherbie Workhorse Award

I was very honored to be awarded the Weatherbie Workhorse Award in 2011.

The Weatherbie Workhorse Award is given annually to one attorney who for years has been a stalwart of real estate continuing legal education without seeking, or receiving, recognition for his or her contributions. This is an attorney who quietly and consistently makes quality contributions to the continuing legal education of the Real Estate Bar.

The recipient is an attorney who always says “yes” when asked, and who always makes the profession proud. The recipient is a volunteer speaker and author on whom the real estate bar has come to depend, without even being aware of its reliance. The Weatherbie Workhorse Award is the chance to thank someone who has given so much, for so long, and who may never receive any other formal recognition for having done so. It’s an award that comes from a heart of gratitude.

The Weatherbie Workhorse Award was created in 2002 and named after Dallas attorney David Weatherbie, a volunteer extraordinaire, who for years masterfully presented the annual real estate case law update with style and humor, often repeating his presentations at local bar associations around the State,
as well as at the State Bar’s annual advanced programs.
